Prêt-à-porter clothing, also known as “ready to wear,” first appeared in the 1950s. The term was first introduced by designer Pierre Cardin in order to popularize fashion and allow garments to reach a wider audience.
Unlike haute couture, which is tailored and more exclusive, ready-to-wear clothing is mass-produced on a large scale and in sizes ranging from extra small to extra large to simplify production and reduce costs.
However, just because it is less expensive does not imply that it is of poor quality. Indeed, among the most prestigious brands in prêt-à-porter are Chanel, Prada, and Gucci, among many others.
